Just when you thought toys sucked after the 80s, some crazy inventors came up with this: The Butterfly in a Jar. It’s probably the most awesomest toy pet you could have, and potentially the toy of the year.

Screw those lame hamsters. You can’t put those things in a jar.

Actually, you can. But they start to smell after awhile.

The butterfly movement is very realistic, but hold off on calling animal cruelty just yet. The butterfly isn’t real, I swear. It uses a teeny tiny electric wire that responds to the tap of your finger making the butterfly flutter around inside the jar (only appearing to be trapped inside). We often refer to this technology as “science”, but I like to call it magic, and that my friends makes these butterflies the bees knees.

The Spillarium is a pretty sweet aquarium that uses mind blowing science to work. In fact, if I even tried to explain it to you right now it would probably boggle your mind and put you in a mental institution. So let’s just say it uses a little thing I like to call “Physics” in order to keep the water cycling, giving it the appearance that it is constantly spilling water from the side. And magically keeping the fish inside the tank to boot. Genius.

Anyways. I’ve looked at this awhile trying to figure out if the design is hideous or beautiful. Instead of answering that I’ve decided to eat a hot dog.

Two clever ideas to turn regular office supplies into animals are the Toothy Alligator Stapler and the Sticky Snail Tape Dispenser. Smart and simple. I like it.

The gator is perfect for biting paper and he also has a soft grip top to be gentle in your hands.

Pokey the snail only makes the tape sticky, but has a non-skid base and is weighted to keep him firm to the table. Also, he’s pretty rad because he’s orange, so he’s clearly the best of the two.

You can now put your hamster, gerbil or mouse in the driver’s seat with a pimpin’ ride to boot. It has some pretty neat features, like the ability to put the car on a race track (Hamtrac sold separately), or even put it in stationary mode for your hamster to run in place.

The cars comes in a variety of other colors like blue or barbie pink and really scares the crap out of cats. The only thing missing in this baby is the passenger seat and the sucky thing is, this car doesn’t turn, and has no airbags.

Still, overall the safety rating was 100% higher than the soccer ball. Mainly because people kicked that. And that was stupid.

These little pet cactii plants are pretty neat. Remember the lucky bamboo key chains from before? They are pretty much the same but also entirely different, because it’s a cactus. They come in blue or pink gels which provide nutrients for the cactus, all they need is a little sun. If they do get enough sun, these 1.75″ beauties will flower too!

Be careful when crossing the border or getting on a plane, these bad boys can’t cross the border with you. And yes, even though this cactus is small enough to smuggle up certain orifices, it’s still a cactus. And that’d be just weird.

11. The Feline Tree House

If you are the type to spoil your affectionate feline then this is it. The pinnacle of gadget gifts for any cat that loves to climb trees. You won’t need a fireman to get them down but you might have a hard time getting them to leave. Unless they are terrified of it or just don’t like it. Yup. I’m not going to lie, the Snuggie, er Snuggy was one of the biggest ‘As Seen On TV’ success stories of the year. Forget that it’s just a bathrobe turned backards, it’s genius. And now, it’s for your pet. They appreciate the geniusness of it too. Trust me, I asked them.

Yup. It’s ridiculously adorable. But somehow the idea of having the smell of urine mask the comfort of my home leaves me with raised eyebrows. I suppose this is one of those things that can go on your porch if you live in an apartment and have a doggy. On second thought, this Potty Patch thing is brilliant. Everyone should have one.

7. Pet Watering Top

It was a really hot day one summer and I went rock climbing and shared my water with my friend who forgot his water. I’m guessing he thought I was finished with the bottle because when someone else’s dog wagged over to us he proceeded to dump the entire bottle of water out for this thirsty, thirsty dog.

At the end of the day I was pretty parched. Anyways. The above photo is a reenactment of exactly how it would look if you were approached by a dog while rock climbing and gave it water using the pet watering top. 3. The Dog Umbrella Leash

Okay. So we’ve seen everything else, we might as well get umbrellas for our dogs. I’ll admit it’s way better than a raincoat for your dog, and the thought of actually having to dry them or give them a bath every time it rains doesn’t make sense if you can just get an umbrella.

And honestly, if your dog is named Mary Poppins, this is pretty much a must-have.

I once had a fish for a very long time. It was a sad sad day when ‘ole Puff Daddy died. I made the mistake of trying to flush him instead of burying him in my backyard. I am pretty sure I needed a poking stick.

Without going into too much detail I can tell you that this Bathtub Plug eerily reminds me of that fateful day. But none the less makes a pretty sweet plug for your bathtub.

Sure. You might find me on the other side of the shower curled up in a ball shivering naked, but that’s normal. Right?
